Research Rounds: North York General Hospital
Benefits, Harms, or No Effect? Real-World Evidence from Major Policy Changes in Canada
REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. PLEASE REGISTER BY AUGUST 31, 2026
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. Daniel Myran MD, MPH, CCFP, FRCPC
Dr. Daniel Myran is a Family Physician, Public Health and Preventive Medicine Physician, and health researcher with an interest in addiction medicine. His research uses health administrative data to examine mental health and substance use, evaluate the impact of public policy, and identify ways to improve access to care, with a focus on addressing health inequities among disadvantaged populations.
Presentation: Across Canada, rapid changes in policy and clinical practice—including a commercial cannabis market, expanded online gambling and single-event sports betting, new school cellphone/social media restrictions, and growing privately delivered virtual care—raise urgent questions about their health effects. Drawing on population-based studies, Dr. Myran will examine how healthcare data and natural experiments can assess whether these changes produce benefits, unintended harms, or little measurable effect, highlighting emerging health challenges, methodological lessons, and implications for family medicine, prevention, and public policy.
