DFCM Chair Dr. Danielle Martin seeking federal office

Dr. Danielle Martin

Dr. Danielle Martin has stepped away from her role as DFCM Chair, effective immediately, as she will be seeking the support of the people of University–Rosedale as a candidate in the upcoming byelection. Dr. Martin will be on leave, and should her campaign be successful, she intends to resign her position as Chair to serve as a Member of Parliament.

During her tenure as Chair, which began in 2021, Dr. Martin has been a champion for academic excellence, collaborative leadership, and the advancement of family medicine within the University of Toronto and beyond. Her commitment to community medicine, equity, and health‑system improvement has shaped the culture and direction of our department. The DFCM community is proud of her continued dedication to public service and her desire to bring the insights of primary care to a broader policy arena.

With Dr. Martin’s leave underway, DFCM is pleased to share that Dr. Shirley Lee has been appointed Acting Chair. Dr. Lee brings deep experience in medical education and departmental leadership. Supporting her in this transition, Dr. David Tannenbaum has accepted the role of Deputy Chair. Both Dr. Lee and Dr. Tannenbaum are highly respected within the department, and we are confident they will provide strong and steady leadership during this period.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Martin for her contributions and commitment to the department and congratulate her as she embarks on this next chapter. Go, Danielle!
