Hospital, Community, Teaching Unit and Program

Newmarket is in the centre of York Region and the Central Local Health Integrated Network and is part of the most rapidly growing area of Ontario. Southlake Regional Health Centre is a busy modern 400-bed hospital providing community care in all basic birthing, medical and surgical services. We respond to the ever changing health care environment nimbly to ensure our services grow and match the community needs. Our vision, core commitments and values reflect our drive in everything we do.

Southlake is a sophisticated tertiary regional referral centre for cardiac care (including cardiac surgery and arrhythmia programs), cancer treatment (including on site radiation therapy and full palliative care service at the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre), child and adolescent mental health (including in-patient program and eating disorders), maternal and perinatal care (including level two neonatal care), and thoracic surgery. We have a busy emergency department with 90,000 visits per year and an efficient

fast-track service. Southlake is nationally known for its state of the art Arrhythmia Program, Arthritis Program and Eating Disorders Program. The Southlake Research Institute is committed to advancing the scholarly work of the people that work here.

The Family Health Team (FHT)

Located in an ultra-modern Medical Arts Building, including the following healthy lifestyle and convenience amenities:

• Attached to the hospital, emphasis on high ceilings and natural light

• Diagnostic imaging (X-ray, US, Mammo) and ambulatory procedures facility

• Special procedures room (minor OR and Gyne Room) in FHT space

 

• Specially-built resident team room

•Healthy eating options across the bridge

• Shower facility in the FHT space

• Conference centre auditorium and meeting room facilities are in same building.

• Electronic Medical Record keeping through Practice Solutions

• Office access to hospital EMR Records and PACS

• AV supervision rooms

• Full interdisciplinary team in place including pharmacist, social worker, RPN’s, nurses and dietician

• Outpatient care in varied community settings (office, after hours clinic, group and residential homes, long term care homes

Curriculum

  • You will manage your own roster of patients over two years.
  • You will have the opportunity to follow them to the birthing unit, emerg, operating room, home and long-term care settings allowing you to provide comprehensive care throughout your residency.
  • You can view hospital reports and imaging during patient visits using our Physician Portal and PACS systems.
  • You can complete your hospital dictations and plan your hospital rounds using remote access.

The elective/selective time can be used to hone your skills and enhance your knowledge in key aspects of family medicine or in special areas of interest that will serve you and your patients and community in your future practice.

We provide more faculty attention and patient care access to our residents. You will be part of a small but much-appreciated group, with few senior learners or speciality residents to crowd your learning experiences. You will have more direct patient care responsibilities and direct interaction with teachers in all rotations.

Family Medicine

Comprehensive patient care as described above with office-based care in our state-of-the-art facility three half days/week. You will also have the opportunity to provide home visits as needed with staff, participate in procedure clinics, gyne clinics and develop one-on-one relationships with teachers. You will also be providing on call service via the Urgent Care Clinic.

Medicine

  • You will have the opportunity to work with multi-level faculty including cardiologists, general internists, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, hematologists, oncologists and respirologists.
  • You will experience both inpatient care and outpatient follow up clinics in Diabetes education, heart failure, hypertension, pain management and palliative care.
  • Often times, you will be the only learner taking advantage of these opportunities.

Mental Health

Our Psychiatry Department works hard to ensure learners are well trained in handling mental illness in primary care. You will participate in crisis intervention, long-term management of mood disorders, personality disorders and psychotic illnesses in child, adolescent and adult populations. The recent addition of the Rapid Access Clinic shows Southlake’s commitment to improving access to this population.

Musculoskeletal  Disease

Join our interdisciplinary teams in The Arthritis Program, Fracture Clinic and Joint Assessment Centre for a thorough understanding of how to manage these common issues presenting to your primary care practice. You will gain comfort in practicing your management, casting skills, and joint injections.

Obstetrics

  • You will have the opportunity to gain obstetrical experience through the Obstetrics Department.
  • You will have the opportunity to follow family medicine patients through prenatal care and attend delivery as well as follow the neonate.
  • During obstetrical shifts, you will hone your intra partum skills with our obstetricians.
  • You will also enhance your gynecological skills with our own FMTU gyne procedures clinic.

Paediatrics  

You will gain experience in the inpatient, outpatient and NICU areas on this rotation and as you follow your own patients when they require paediatric care.

Palliative Medicine

  • You will work with dedicated CCFP faculty with practices focused on palliative medicine.
  • You will experience inpatient care for complex pain and symptom management.
  • You will also have the opportunity to meet patients at the Cancer Clinic, home and hospices and learn about end-of-life care.

Surgery (General Surgery, Urology, Otolaryngology, Cardiac, Plastics)

You will gain inpatient and clinic experiences in each of these subspecialties. You will have the ability to go to the OR if desired. Each surgical sub-specialty will last approximately two weeks. Call for consultations to the emergency will be integrated into the experience.

Family Medicine Inpatient

Inpatient care is provided by family physicians for frail elderly, stroke survivors, trauma rehab, and other patients facing life altering conditions and diseases. This rotation is taught by dedicated family doctors who understand the competencies essential to an inpatient experience for a family doctor.

Emergency Medicine

  • You will have the chance to experience a busy emergency department that sees over 70,000 visits a year.
  • You will spend your shift with experienced emerg physicians that have a commitment to teaching.
  • You may occasionally also work with family physicians that incorporate emerg into their busy lives.

The emerg is an interdisciplinary environment that is dynamic with opportunity to work in resuscitation bays, acute care and sub-acute care areas.

1st Year

Rotation location duration description
Family Medicine

Southlake Family Health Team

3 half days per week for two years 

Comprehensive family medicine with preceptor. Mini practice for the resident for two years of continuous care. Residents may also "adopt" unattached patients on all rotations and carry on care in the FMTU after discharge from various programs providing an exceptional opportunity for continuity of care.

Electives Various 2 Months

Electives on or off-site to be chosen based on interest, career planning and/or furthering knowledge.

Medicine

Southlake Regional Health Centre

2 Months

Multi-level faculty including of general internists and cardiologists. Emergency department consults, inpatient care and outpatient cardiology clinics.

Mental Health Southlake Regional Health Centre 1 Month

Inpatient and outpatient care for patients. Participate in crisis intervention, and long-term management of mood disorders, personality disorders and psychotic illnesses, in child, adolescent, and adult populations. Provide medical care to, and address the social needs of, the mental health patient population.

Obstetrics with obstetricians, advanced practice nurses, and midwives. Additional opportunity to participate in OB-Gyne Clinic in FMTU during family medicine half days.

Paediatrics Southlake Regional Health Centre 1 Month

Inpatient, outpatient and NICU experience.

Palliative Medicine Southlake Regional Health Centre 1 Month

Outpatient care in Cancer Clinic, inpatient care on Palliative Unit, in home and residential hospice visits for end-of-life care.

Surgery Southlake Regional Health Centre 2 Months

Ambulatory procedures, operating room and inpatient care experience office time in general surgery, otolaryngology, and urology, and cardiac.

Emergency Medicine Southlake Regional Health Centre 1 Month

The emerg is an interdisciplinary environment that is dynamic with an opportunity to work in resuscitation bays, acute care and sub-acute care areas.
