Trillium Health Partners – Mississauga Hospital houses most of the hospital’s inpatient services and has 827 acute, rehabilitation and chronic care beds. This location also has a 24-hour Emergency Care Centre. We also have one of the largest birthing centres in the region.

Trillium Health Partners - Queensway Health Centre is a model ambulatory care center, which offers patients access to one of the most convenient and comprehensive range of outpatient services in the country. The Queensway Health Centre also features a 14-hour Urgent Care Centre that sees over 61,000 patients annually, one of the largest day surgery centres in North America (Surgicentre), a widely-recognized Cardiac Wellness & Rehabilitation Centre, the first comprehensive spine centre of its kind in Canada (Kingsway Financial Spine Centre), and The Betty Wallace Women’s Health Centre, with a focus on early intervention and screening of osteoporosis and breast disease. Enthusiastic experienced family physicians, leading community specialists and subspecialists, provide unique educational mentoring to the family practice residents. Residents will have the opportunity to work at Trillium Health Partners Mississauga Hospital and Queensway Health Centre. The hospital experience will include internal medicine, emergency medicine, paediatrics, mental health, obstetrics, women’s health, palliative, psychiatry and more!

Trillium Health Partners - Mississauga Hospital is situated in the heart of the city’s south end, just minutes from the QEW and is serviced by local public transit systems. Mississauga is the sixth largest city in Canada and is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the nation. The bustling waterfront, many parks, art and theater at the Living Arts Centre, nightly entertainment, fine dining and shopping at Square One – one of Ontario’s largest shopping malls, makes Mississauga the perfect city for both learning and leisure.

The postgraduate program is optimally suited for self-motivated and assiduous residents, with the aspirations of establishing a community-based practice that will offer a full continuum of comprehensive primary care.

Curriculum

The two-year horizontal program is built around the fundamental experience of residents providing ongoing medical care for their own patients within the Family Medicine Teaching Unit (FMTU).

  • You will manage a mini practice of 150 patients that they will inherit from the practice of our graduating residents.
  • Throughout the majority of their specialty rotations, you will see your own family medicine patients three half days per week throughout the two years (exception: during the PGY2 rural experience, you are not required to manage your patients at the FMTU or attend the academic half-day seminars).
  • You will have an opportunity to build and maintain your own family practice.
  • You will develop continuing relationships with patients and their families.
  • You will sustain your role as a family physician throughout your training.

While maintaining your regular family medicine clinic, you will spend one to three months within several of the Trillium Health Partners’ site’s specialty departments, resulting in eight to 12 specialty placements per year. PGY1 core rotations include family medicine, internal medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics/women’s health, musculoskeletal, mental health, emergency medicine, surgery, as well as one elective/selective rotation. The flexibility of our second-year curriculum recognizes the need for you to identify your learning objectives and select rotations accordingly.

With five elective/selective months, you are provided with the opportunity to choose the rotations that will meet your learning needs. You are provided with support for completion of your academic project. Family medicine physician teachers assist you in publishing your own peer reviewed journal during the first year of your residency. PGY1 and PGY2 residents will also spend one half day per week in academic seminars.

Trillium Health Partners - Mississauga Hospital has an expanding breadth of teaching opportunities. Our residents currently assist in teaching Arts and Science of Clinical Medicine (ASCM) students as well seminars for family medicine clerks on their core rotation block. With the Mississauga Academy of Medicine, there are increased opportunities to mentor and teach undergraduate medical students.
