Michael Garron Hospital (formally the Toronto East General Hospital), is a vibrant 450-bed community teaching hospital serving one of Canada’s most diverse communities in the heart of East Toronto. As a significant member of East Toronto Health Partners, the Ontario Health Team (OHT) serving East Toronto, MGH delivers health services to 400,000 people and has recently expanded its facilities with the opening of an 8-story Patient Care Tower to better service its growing community. Affiliated with the University of Toronto, MGH is seeking a visionary, forward-thinking strategic leader who will serve as a role model in supporting the hospital’s strategic direction and, in addition to being an excellent primary care clinician, be an agent of change for the Department of Family & Community Medicine (DFCM). The MGH DFCM is one of the largest teaching sites in the GTA for primary care, and is a highly sought-after by trainees. We have multiple teaching sites, and opportunities for trainees to gain broad experience across our diverse community. 

Job description:

Reporting jointly to the Chief of Staff, VP Medical and VP Clinical, the new Chief will support the design and adoption of models of care which will improve the quality of services offered by the department within and outside the hospital in association with an expanded academic role for the department. The Chief will be an individual highly respected for their strong academic credentials, clinical excellence and integrity, and will be able to continue to build our relationships across East Toronto and with our hospital and university partners. This leader will be able to collaborate effectively and concurrently with many partners, ably manage multiple accountabilities in a complex health system, and build mutually beneficial successful partnerships.   

The successful candidate will be an innovative and creative leader, able to develop and execute models of care that support primary care across our diverse population, with a priority on optimizing primary care access for unattached patients in our community, and a view to addressing primary-care sensitive conditions that keep our patients well in the community. They will demonstrate an interest in and support for embedded quality and safety research, with a goal of building the standard of tomorrow’s care, today.   

The leader will be astute about how various primary care funding models in Ontario affect practice, and will be able to negotiate with various stakeholders including the Ministry, our OHT, and Family Medicine Clinics in the provision of high quality care and teaching.  MGH is one of the largest teaching sites for the University of Toronto Department of Family & Community Medicine and the incoming Chief will build on and grow our success as a highly sought-after teaching hospital for primary care. They will excel at attracting, recruiting, retaining and mentoring outstanding Department members and future leaders. 

The new Chief will possess an active CFPC, be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario and be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Toronto.
