Applications are invited for the position of Chief, Department of Family & Community Medicine (DFCM) at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto. The anticipated start date is fall 2025 or as mutually agreed upon. This appointment is for a five-year term renewable upon successful review.

St. Michael’s Hospital is a leading academic health sciences centre, renowned for providing excellent, efficient and integrated care experiences for all, which along with St. Joseph’s Health Centre and Providence Healthcare forms Unity Health Toronto, a network of Catholic Healthcare institutions. Affectionately known as the Urban Angel, St. Michael’s is leading in cutting-edge specialty programs, and breaking new ground in health AI, with a focus on improving patient outcomes and operational efficiency. As downtown Toronto’s adult trauma centre, the hospital is a hub for neurosurgery, complex cardiac and cardiovascular care, diabetes, stroke care, minimally invasive surgery and care of those with experience of homelessness, with a commitment to our mission and values. Fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and home to the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St. Michael’s and the DFCM sits at the forefront of global health research, innovation and education.

The St. Michael’s Hospital DFCM is one of the largest and most productive academic departments in family medicine in Canada. It is a thriving academic department with over 250 team members and learners working within five clinics in Downtown East Toronto caring for over 50,000 patients. Eighty-two staff physicians, including 8 researchers, are responsible for providing clinical services, teaching and academic activities. The Department has an emphasis on the provision of health services to the populations with experiences of profound disadvantage and vulnerability and a commitment to health equity, including strategic anti-oppression initiatives. The Department has a robust family practice obstetrics service, home visiting team, substance use management program, social prescribing program, strong focus on quality improvement, a psychology service through an agreement with Toronto Metropolitan University and a chiropractic service in association with the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. The Department also enjoys collaboration with the DFCM at the St. Joseph’s Health Centre site.

St. Michael’s seeks an outstanding leader with strong clinical, academic, administrative and interpersonal skills who as Chief fosters health systems advocacy and excellence in innovative patient care services and teaching while assuming the major role of leading the growth and development of interprofessional community-based research within the Department. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to faculty development, interprofessional practice and the promotion of partnerships such as those in the community, and will have established a strong academic track record. They will hold a CCFP or equivalent, be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario and should be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at the University of Toronto. Estimated remuneration will be commensurate with academic rank, qualifications and experience.
