Position Summary
The Department of Family & Community Medicine (DFCM) has had a long history of recognizing teaching and education excellence and supporting faculty members to pursue education research and leadership opportunities. DFCM faculty members have been recognized for their teaching excellence, innovation, leadership, mentorship and advocacy at the local, institutional, national and international levels.
The DFCM Awards, Grants and Funds (AGF) Lead will chair the AGF committee. The Committee will report to the DFCM Faculty Development (FD) Program Director and will have three key purposes:
- To promote, organize and oversee the selection process for FD program awards, FD Fund, and FD Educational Initiative Grant
- To promote, organize and oversee the selection process for the DFCM Awards of Excellence.
- To promote, identify, and select nominees for external awards
The DFCM Awards, Grants and Funds (AGF) Lead will support the advancement of innovation in awards processes, knowledge translation and scholarship.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada. The candidate will possess excellent leadership, oral and written communication, as well as organizational and team building skills, a proven ability to lead and work well with others, and a strong commitment to faculty members and staff. The candidate will demonstrate dedication to faculty recognition and development to enhance delivery of a strong DFCM Awards program. The candidate will have relevant experience as a clinician and educator and in creating successful nomination packages, as well as demonstrate a commitment toward promoting scholarly activities in the discipline of family medicine. The candidate will be strongly committed to the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, Indigeneity and accessibility, and to the reduction of implicit bias in all awards, grants and funds processes at DFCM.
The candidate will have achieved, or be eligible for promotion to, the rank of Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. The position start date is November 1, 2024.
Duties and Responsibilities
Recognition and Awards
- Facilitate faculty members’ awareness of all awards within the DFCM, across the Faculty of Medicine and external to the University of Toronto.
- Review annually the criteria, focus and selection process for the FD program awards, FD fund, and FD Educational Initiative Grant.
- Chair the FD Awards Committee.
- Ensure that the criteria and focus of the DFCM Awards of Excellence meet the depth and breadth of the articulated strategic goals of the Department of Family and Community Medicine and are aligned with potential external awards
- Chair the DFCM Awards Committee.
- Advise and make recommendations to the Faculty Development Program Director on the selection of Departmental nominees (including faculty, staff and learners) to departmental, faculty, institutional and external education and teaching award competitions.
- Ensure that awards are tracked in a database.
- Organize and lead the annual DFCM Awards and Celebration Event.
Collaboration, Partnerships, and Service
- Develop a plan for timely and effective communication
- For informing sites, divisions and programs of faculty award deadlines and criteria.
- For receiving notices of recipients from other programs including Undergraduate program, Postgraduate program, Quality and Innovation program, Office of Education Scholarship, Global Health Program and Research Program
- Develop an outreach process with programs, Hospital Chiefs, and Division Heads to identify candidates for award nominations.
- Lead a robust process to identify individuals for nomination based on award ‘tracks’ (i.e. program award à DFCM award à Faculty of Medicine award à University of Toronto award à provincial/national award). This will be accomplished in collaboration with program directors, chiefs and the DFCM Academic Promotions Office.
Reporting
- The DFCM Awards, Grants and Funds Lead will report to DFCM Faculty Development Program Director
- Prepare an annual report on progress and activities
- Other reports as required

Support
Administrative support will be provided by a DFCM administrator.
Appointment
- The position will be funded for approximately 1 half day per week.
- This is a three-year appointment. A mid-appointment review will be conducted at approximately the one-year point. The appointment is renewable once after a satisfactory term review.
