Position Summary
The University of Toronto’s Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) is recognized internationally for advancing high quality patient-centred care through excellence in education, research, and innovative clinical practice. With one of the largest family medicine training programs in North America, DFCM provides rich and diverse learning experiences through comprehensive and innovative curricula that span the continuum of medical education. DFCM faculty members are clinical and academic leaders who are breaking new ground in areas such as inner-city health, global health, palliative care, primary care obstetrics, mental health and addiction care, immigrant, and Indigenous health, and are advancing primary care research.
The Division of Hospital Medicine is an academic community of clinicians dedicated to enhancing medical education, research, quality improvement, and innovation for inpatient medicine and leading change at the system level. The Head of the Division of Hospital Medicine will lead a community of learners, teachers, innovators, and researchers working together to provide valuable clinical, administrative and leadership services in Hospital Medicine. The Division Head will promote excellence in clinical care, education, research, quality improvement and knowledge translation.

Requirements
The ideal candidate will have certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada. The candidate will possess excellent leadership, communication, organizational and team building skills, a proven ability to lead and work well with others, and a strong commitment to learners and faculty members. The candidate will present a strong vision for the development of Hospital Medicine education, research, and quality improvement initiatives, and will promote faculty development and relationship building across the community and at affiliated sites. The candidate will have relevant experience as a clinician and educator and will demonstrate a commitment toward promoting scholarly activities in Hospital Medicine. The candidate will have will have achieved, or be eligible for promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto.
The position start date is October 1, 2024.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Head of the DFCM Division of Hospital Medicine will be responsible, with the assistance of the Hospital Medicine Leads, for all division activities:
- Strategic Planning
- Lead the development and ongoing implementation of a Division Strategic Plan.
- Communication, collaboration, and relationship building
- Facilitate Hospital Medicine communications and collaborations across the Division, affiliated hospital sites and partnering departments and programs, and DFCM programs
- Build connections and foster relationships across the broad hospital medicine community
- Education
- Work collaboratively with DFCM education leaders and program directors to support ongoing development and delivery of Hospital Medicine education for learners in the MD program, Family Medicine PGY1 & 2 program, enhanced skills PGY3 program and other Hospital Medicine Clinical Fellowship programs.
- Promote and support education scholarship across the Division through collaborations with the DFCM Office of Education Scholarship, affiliated hospital sites and Department of Medicine, DFCM programs.
- Research
- Promote and support research across the Division through collaborations with affiliated hospital sites, DFCM Research and other programs.
- Quality Improvement
- In collaboration with the DFCM Q&I program, promote quality improvement activities across the division.
- Faculty Development
- In collaboration with the Hospital Medicine Faculty Development Lead, promote faculty development and continuing education within the Hospital Medicine Division.
- Monitor the ongoing faculty development requirements of Hospital Medicine Division faculty members.
- Advance academic opportunities and involvement among hospitalists in the broader community who are not currently engaged with the Division
- Foster the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of Hospital Medicine Division faculty development events and programs.
- Oversee the preparation of faculty appointments for new faculty.
- Support faculty in preparing applications for junior and senior promotions.
- Work with the Hospital Medicine Faculty Development Lead to facilitate Hospital Medicine Division faculty members’ and trainees’ awareness of awards within DFCM, across the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and external to the University of Toronto.
- Coordinate nominations of Hospital Medicine Division faculty and residents for internal and external awards.
- Coordinate annual faculty retreat to foster collaboration, learning and professional wellbeing.
- Advancement
- Foster advancement opportunities in collaboration with the DFCM Chair, Administration and Business Director, and Senior Development Officer.
- Budget
- Develop and manage the annual Hospital Medicine Division budget.
- Reports
- Submit the Hospital Medicine report for DFCM annual report.
- Provide a report to the DFCM Executive Committee annually or at the request of the Chair
- Collaboration, Partnerships and Service
- Represent DFCM with the goal of communicating and fostering collaborative relationships with affiliated hospital sites and departments, DFCM programs.
- Collaborate with other DFCM Academic Divisions to develop optimal and consistent practices on the design and operations of DFCM Academic Divisions.
- Establish and maintain positive and well-functioning links with DFCM faculty and staff to include:
- DFCM Program Directors.
- DFCM Chair and Vice-Chairs.
- Community of Practice in Hospital Medicine for DFCM faculty and others, to create a home in DFCM for those with interests in Hospital Medicine clinical work, scholarship, and collaborations
- Administrative staff as appropriate to conduct required duties.
- Reporting
- The Hospital Medicine Division Head will report to the DFCM Chair.
- Committees
- Establish and chair the following committee:
- Division of Hospital Medicine Executive Committee.
- Serve on the following DFCM committees:
- DFCM Executive Committee.
- Committee of the Heads of DFCM Divisions
- Appoint chairs or co-chairs to the various standing committees.
- Establish and chair the following committee:
- Supports
- The various responsibilities of the Hospital Medicine Division Head are conducted with the support of a Divisions Project and Administrative Coordinator, central DFCM supports of Finance Manager, Business Officer, Communications Analyst, Business and Administrative Director, and Senior Advancement Officer.
- Appointment
- The position is approximately one half-day per week.
- This is a five-year term. A review will be conducted after 2 years to ensure all parties are satisfied that the appropriate duties and responsibilities are being met, with appropriate support. At the discretion of the DFCM Chair the appointment is renewable once after a satisfactory end of term review.
- The Hospital Medicine Division Head will be compensated by DFCM.
