The Department: The Department of Family Medicine is an academic leader of family medicine in Canada. The Department is committed to training and inspiring the next generation of Family Physician clinicians, researchers, educators, and leaders. We deliver the highest quality clinical care, produce impactful research, advance inter-disciplinary care models, and strengthen community partnerships. The Ian McWhinney Chair holder will conduct research within the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine (CSFM), a world-renowned centre for primary care research within the Department of Family Medicine. The CSFM specializes in interdisciplinary research in family medicine, primary care, health systems, and community health to transform the health and care of patients, providers and the population.
The City: London, Ontario is Canada’s 10th largest city with a population of 400,000, a catchment area of 2.4 million, and is situated in southwestern Ontario between Toronto and Detroit. Job description:
Position Profile:
The Department of Family Medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, is inviting applications for the Dr. Ian McWhinney Chair in Family Medicine. The Dr. Ian McWhinney Chair in Family Medicine was established to honour Dr. McWhinney who was the first Professor of Family Medicine in Canada and the first Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. The successful candidate will be an established Family Medicine researcher and will be appointed to the Department of Family Medicine with a potential cross appointment in a relevant basic science department.
Academic and Clinical Expectations:
The candidate will have protected research time within the Department of Family Medicine. The successful candidate will be appointed to fit the Academic Role Category (ARC) of a clinician researcher or clinician scientist in the Department of Family Medicine at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, depending on academic record. Up to 80% of the successful candidate’s time will be protected for research. This is a continuing appointment. The Chair will be committed to academic activity and program development within family medicine research. Clinical work, education (undergraduate, postgraduate, and graduate), and administrative duties and expectations will be determined by the Department of Family Medicine and aligned with clinical interests of the successful candidate.
Qualifications:
Candidates must hold an MD or equivalent and practice as a family physician. Candidates must also hold certification or be eligible for certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada and be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario. A family physician with at least 10 years of experience as an independent investigator, with an established research program, excellent publication record, and demonstrated grant success is preferred. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellence in Family Medicine, Primary Care, Education, and/or Health Services Research.
Compensation Details:
The Chair appointment is for a five-year period, with the possibility of renewal for one additional term pending review recommendation. Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience and will be composed primarily of the following sources: clinical income from the Ontario Health Insurance Plan, alternative funding plan and academic support.
