EM Educational Innovations and Offerings
DFCM's Division of EM faculty are involved in the creation, development, and administration of several innovative programs, conferences, and educational innovations. This includes Emergency Medicine Cases, CASTED—The “Hands-On” ED Orthopedics Course, First10EM, Toronto Women in Emergency Medicine (TWEM), and North York General’s Emergency Medicine Update Conference.
Emergency Medicine Cases (EM Cases) is a free online medical education podcast, medical blog and website dedicated to providing online emergency medicine education and CME for physicians, residents, students, nurses and paramedics.
This year marks the 36th annual update in emergency medicine in beautiful Whistler, British Columbia. This is a University of Toronto conference that celebrates the contributions mainly from the tri-division of emergency medicine. This in-person program has been designed to help physicians improve their skills in the identification, assessment, and treatment of patients with a number of common yet potentially challenging problems in emergency medicine.
As an EM community we need a place to gather, share our experiences and celebrate small and large successes. We will bring you expert faculty, practice-changing insights and updates, hands-on workshops and CME accredited education.
CASTED: Emergency is the hands-on ED orthopedics course designed specifically for Emergency physicians, residents, and staff. CASTED is ruthlessly clinical—designed to improve the quality of ED ortho assessments, x-ray interpretation, reductions and immobilization, and disposition skills.
First10EM is a website dedicated to improving the practice of emergency medicine, with two primary focuses: 1) using mental practice to prepare for the initial resuscitation of critically ill patients, and 2) improving critical thinking and understanding of medical science.
As Deputy Editor of the Canadian Medical Association Journal, Dr. Catherine Varner oversees the Practice section of the journal, which publishes articles that support generalist clinicians in their clinical practice. She also writes editorials about pressing issues related to the health of Canadians, including an article in June 2023 called, "Emergency departments are in crisis now and for the foreseeable future."
Toronto Women in Emergency Medicine
Toronto Women in Emergency Medicine (TWEM) is a community of committed individuals consisting of representatives from city-wide, tri-divisional group and EM residency programs that offer regular discussions and networking opportunities in mentorship, sponsorship, and coaching with the hope of building confidence and fostering empowerment in those who identify as women in emergency medicine.
