Medical Expert
The PGY3 resident will:
- Perform a complete and culturally appropriate assessment of refugee patients
- Explore both the disease and the patient’s own personal experience of illness
- Incorporate prevention and health promotion into clinical encounters
- Provide care that is culturally appropriate with an awareness of and respect for local beliefs, customs and practices
Communicator
The PGY3 resident will:
- Develop rapport and trust with patients and families across cultural and linguistic differences
- Accurately convey relevant information and explanations to patients and families
- Take into account cultural and experiential differences and individual patient vulnerabilities
- Demonstrate skill in the use of language interpreter services as a tool in facilitating optimal patient care
Collaborator
The PGY3 resident will:
- Participate effectively and appropriately in an interprofessional healthcare team caring for refugees
Manager
The PGY3 resident will:
- Allocate finite healthcare resources appropriately in caring for refugees
Health Advocate
The PGY3 resident will:
- Respond to the health needs of individual refugees particularly those most neglected and vulnerable
- Advocate for refugees around relevant health matters
- Identify the determinants of health amongst refugees including barriers to accessing care and resources
- Identify opportunities for outreach to community resources and health partners to achieve better health outcomes for refugees
Scholar
The PGY3 resident will:
- Read around cases to promote ongoing learning and learn from encounters with refugees
Professional
The PGY3 resident will:
- Exhibit professional behaviours in practising including reliability, compassion, respect, and commitment to refugee well being
