DFCM Research Rounds
Dr. Tavis Apramian is a clinician-investigator in the Division of Palliative Care, Department of Family & Community Medicine, at the University of Toronto and a scientist in the DFCM’s Office of Education Scholarship. Clinically, he works as a palliative care physician at St. Michael’s Hospital and Kensington Hospice. His largely qualitative program of research is focused on palliative care in family medicine; serious illness communication; workplace-based learning and assessment; medical assistance in dying; and inequity in end-of-life care. His primary focus is on telling rich stories of learner and patient experiences to spark conversation about socioculturally complex educational and clinical problems in serious illness care. Additional research appointments include Medical Research Lead at Kensington Hospice, Scholar in The Wilson Centre, and Assistant Professor (status only) in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME).
In this ongoing program of research, Dr. Tavis Apramian will discuss how family physicians learn to engage patients with serious illness in preparing for the future. The presentation will first highlight recent findings on barriers to effective serious illness communication within family medicine training. Following this, Dr. Apramian will explore current efforts to develop educational theories aimed at scaffolding workplace-based teaching and learning to better support patients with progressive illnesses.
