The Five Weekend Care of the Elderly Certificate Course
This CFPC/RCPSC accredited course is aimed at primary care practitioners and geriatrics consultants who want to develop their own clinical skills or function as a resource in their communities.
It was developed by family physicians for family physicians, and features a longitudinal teaching format taking place on five weekends (2 in-person and 3 virtually) over the course of approximately 6 months. This is a format that originated in business schools but was later adapted in the mid-1990's by the University of Toronto, DFCM to train academic family physician leaders. It allows practising physicians to attend with minimal disturbance to their week-day clinical duties.
Each weekend focuses on a theme;
- cognitive impairment,
- gait disturbances,
- chronic pain,
- medical problems specific to older adults
- and failure to thrive.
Participants complete written assignments between the weekend sessions, which involve self-reflection on how the new knowledge and skills gained through the course will be incorporated into their practices. Participants reconvene at the next weekend to share their ideas and solutions on how to tackle clinical conundrums and improve care of the elderly.
