Physiology & Black Health Symposium

This event is hosted by the Department of Physiology at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.

Join us on March 15 from 3:30-6:00pm for the Department of Physiology’s inaugural symposium on Physiology and Black Health.

 This year’s event features:

  • Dr. Kacie Deters of UCLA’s Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology who researches dementia in Black populations;
  • Dr. Angeline Dukes of the University of Minnesota, another neuroscientist with a teaching stream appointment and significant experience leading EDI initiatives;
  • Dr. Terence Keel, who holds a split appointment in the Department of African American Studies and the UCLA Institute for Society and Genetics and brings us a historical perspective on the ways in which anti-Black racism has co-evolved with science;
  • And our keynote speaker, Dr. AJ Hinton, of Vanderbilt University’s Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics who will speak to us about building inclusive labs based on his own experience running a diabetes research program as well as his significant DEI and mentorship scholarship.

While the symposium is especially geared toward the basic science community, the event is open to all in the Temerty Medicine ecosystem.

Location: Macleod Auditorium (Room 2158), Medical Sciences Building, University of Toronto, St. George Campus
