Research summary:  

Dr. Osnat Melamed is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, a Scientist with the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research (IMHPR), and a staff physician in the Addictions Division at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), where she works in the Nicotine Dependence and general Addictions clinics. 

After completing her family medicine residency, she pursued postgraduate fellowships in Addiction Medicine and Medical Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, followed by the TUTOR–Primary Health Care research program. In 2022 to 2023 she was named an AMS Healthcare Fellow in Compassion and Artificial Intelligence. She received the New Investigator Award from the DFCM in 2023 and, in 2026, the DFCM Clinician Scientist Award. 

Her research addresses the health disparities faced by people living with mental health and addiction conditions, focusing on tobacco use and the intersections between chronic medical illness and mental health. A scientist with CAMH's INTREPID Lab, she develops digital health tools, including AI-based chatbots and smartphone apps, to deliver personalized smoking cessation support, with particular attention to the needs of women.
