Certificate in Academic Family Medicine

This certificate is designed to provide family physicians, clinical fellows, and primary care professionals with advanced and comprehensive academic training in family medicine scholarship, leadership, education and program delivery to address the growing need for skilled leaders and educators in the field.

For faculty who are passionate about advancing their academic careers, whether new to academia or looking to deepen their impact, enhancing their competitiveness and contributing to the evolving landscape of family medicine without the commitment of a full graduate degree, this program offers a high-level professional development pathway.

Objectives

Family medicine excellence in the health system  

  • Examine the history of primary care in Canada as well as the socio-political influences on the discipline’s development and reform over time.  
  • Identify and describe a variety of social, scientific, and political influences on primary health care delivery in Ontario.  
  • Apply the impact of social, scientific, and political influences to one’s own practice locale and to other healthcare professions in primary care.   
  • Debate and critically question issues related to primary care  

Teaching and Learning  

  • Select and apply a teaching and learning theory to participants’ own teaching activities such as teaching in the clinical setting or designing a workshop  
  • Use a framework or model and a systematic approach to develop and deliver education courses or programs  
  • Develop a personal teaching philosophy 

Scholarship  

  • Appraise evidence and be able to judge the quality of published research.  
  • Demonstrate knowledge of a range of research and quality improvement methodologies and their appropriate applications.   
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply scholarly approach to a clinical or academic project. 

Capstone Project

  • To synthesize and apply the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the program in a self-directed scholarly project.

Target Audience

Current or prospective faculty members from any recognized health care profession or speciality who are practicing in their fields

Program Length

This 4-module program can be completed within 8-12 months up to a maximum of 24 months.

Certificate and Credits

  • A Certificate of Completion will be issued by the Office of Continuing Professional Development to participants who satisfactorily complete the program.
  • Learners are evaluated on each component on a pass / fail basis. There is no terminal examination or thesis. All components must be passed.
  • 4 course CFPC Mainpro+® Certified credits (ranging from 17.5 to 50.5/course) 
  • Credit transfer opportunities available from the Certificate to a Masters degree

Program Requirements

Required Courses

The certificate is comprised of 3 courses that are established in our graduate studies programming at DFCM and Dalla Lana School of Public Health. The courses will help learners to expand family medicine expertise from a systems lens, build skills in teaching and learning in the health professions, and develop skills in a preferred scholarship domain, all of which highlight key components of academic family medicine as a discipline.

  • Family Medicine | FD03: Social, Political, and Scientific Issues in Family Medicine 

  • Teaching & Learning in Health Professions | INTAPT (FD07 + FD08): Interprofessional Applied Practical Teaching and Learning in the Health Professions 

  • Primary Care Scholarship: Research Issues (FD05) OR Leading Improvement in Family Medicine (FD13) 

Required Capstone Project

The capstone project serves as a culminating academic activity, enabling participants to demonstrate their competence by integrating and applying concepts learned throughout the Certificate in Academic Family Medicine. The project should be relevant and meaningful within the participant’s academic or clinical context.

Participants may choose one of the following approaches: 

1. Enhance a previous course-based project, such as: 

  • Expanding a Quality Improvement (QI) initiative by adding Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles and a sustainability strategy

  • Preparing a Research Ethics Board (REB) submission

  • Designing a curriculum map

  • Developing a personal academic portfolio 

2. Develop a new project proposal tailored to their academic or clinical setting
