Description of Organization & Job:

The MD Program Family Medicine Longitudinal Experience (FMLE) Component Director, will report reports jointly to the Director, Year 2 Foundations and the Director of the Undergraduate Education Program in the Department of Family & Community Medicine (DFCM) and is responsible for curricular content, innovations, logistics and optimizing the FMLE program. The FMLE Component Director will be the face of FMLE to students, preceptors and the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and serve as a resource to Undergraduate Medical Education for initiatives involving Family and Community Medicine. The time commitment for this position is equivalent to approximately 1.5 days per week.

Component Description:

The Family Medicine Longitudinal (FMLE) is an integral component of the second year of the Foundations curriculum. It constitutes early clinical exposure for students to community-based primary care. The FMLE is an opportunity to reflect on family medicine as a career choice, practice clinical skills, demonstrate professional behaviours and collaboration, and introduce skills such as clinical documentation and the use of electronic medical records. FMLE is delivered in two cohorts during the fall and winter and constitutes six half-days of clinical exposure.

Role Description:

The FMLE Component Director is responsible for curricular content, innovations, logistics and optimizing the FMLE program. The FMLE Component Director will be the face of FMLE to students, preceptors and the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and serve as a resource to Undergraduate Medical Education for initiatives involving Family and Community Medicine.

The FMLE Component Director reports jointly to the Director, Year 2 Foundations and the Director of the Undergraduate Education Program in the Department of Family & Community Medicine (DFCM). The FMLE Component Director works in close collaboration with the MD Program course and component directors, the DFCM Undergraduate Director, community preceptors and administrative staff.

The time commitment for the FMLE Component Director position is equivalent to approximately 1.5 half days per week.

Component Development and Management:

  1. The Component Director will oversee all aspects of FMLE, including:
  2. The development of learning outcomes, learning materials, and assessments that align with the MD Program Competency Framework.
  3. Component delivery, including spiraling and scaffolding of FMLE content into other curricular areas where appropriate.
  4. Component evaluation and preparation of an annual report.

Responsibilities of the Component Director include:

  1. FMLE scheduling and logistics
    1. Prepare FMLE orientation sessions and documentation.
    2. Oversee the student-preceptor match process (including any updates to the process and algorithm) and troubleshoot any issues with match results
    3. Support the scheduling of half-days available to FMLE in year 2 Foundations.
    4. Ensure the schedule is learner-centered and meets accreditation requirements.
  2. FMLE preceptor recruitment and management
    1. Support the recruitment and retention of FMLE preceptors.
    2. Work with the Office of Faculty Development in the faculty development of community preceptors, including:
      1. Ensure optimal resources for preceptors including the preceptor handbook & web site
      2. Oversee faculty development communications and newsletter (“Preceptor Post”)
      3. Review teacher evaluations, identify and support preceptors in difficulty
    3. Participate in the DFCM Undergraduate Awards adjudication committee
  1. Component materials
    1. Review and update learning outcomes as required.
    2. Review and update learning resources on Elentra including the FMLE page and student handbook
    3. Collaborate with Director, Year 2 Foundations, and course directors in the development and ongoing quality improvement of component materials.
  2. Construction and use of suitable assessments
    1. With support from the Office of Assessment and Evaluation, review and implement FMLE assessments.
    2. Implement faculty development initiatives to support preceptors in reviewing student assignments and evaluations.
    3. Monitor overall progression status for all students, identify students in difficulty, and report to the appropriate course director.
    4. Identify and check-in with students with professionalism concerns and/or in academic difficulty, and implement remediation plans as necessary
    5. Identify and check in with students in academic difficulty, and offer support and/or referral (e.g., Office of Learner Affairs, AACE-IT, SCORE, the DFCM Undergraduate Director) if needed.
  3. FMLE evaluation
    1. Collaborate with the Office of Assessment and Evaluation to promote, review, and act on evaluation data.
    2. Ensure the systematic collection and analysis of information related to the design, implementation, and Family Medicine curricular components and outcomes of the FMLE, for the purpose of monitoring and improving the quality and effectiveness of the program.
    3. Implement FMLE committee feedback.
    4. Meet and consult with student representatives regularly.
    5. Respond to individual student concerns.
    6. Communicate with the class as required to address student concerns.

Collaboration and Service:

Consult regularly with the DFCM Undergraduate Director, and the MD Program Director, Year 2 Foundations.

  1. Work with the DFCM Undergraduate Director and other stakeholders to support the ongoing presence and promotion of primary care.
  2. Work with the Undergraduate Education Scholarship Lead to ensure that a scholarly approach is taken with respect to curricular innovations.
  3. Work with the Physician Recruitment and Faculty Development Coordinator to ensure that the ongoing needs of both new and experienced FMLE faculty are met in terms of faculty development, mentorship, and teaching.
  4. Chair bi-monthly FMLE committee meetings
  5. Attend Foundations Committee meetings
  6. Serve as a member of the DFCM Undergraduate Education Committee.
  7. Serve on, and liaise with, committees at the MD Program as deemed appropriate
  1. Establish and maintain positive and well-functioning links with:
    1. Director, Year 2 Foundations
    2. DFCM Undergraduate Director
    3. Component directors
    4. Theme leads
    5. Academy Directors
    6. The student body and its representatives
    7. Administrative staff, as appropriate, to carry out required duties.
    8. The Office of Faculty Development
  2. Attend appropriate local and national meetings (where funding permits) relevant to duties and responsibilities.

Required qualifications:

  • Current CMPA membership
  • Registered and a member of good standing with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario
  • Ability to perform assessments, diagnosis, treatment, health education/counselling and other medical functions as required according to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario standards or practice and West Park Healthcare Centre’s policies and procedures
  • Sharing in after-hours on-call (rotation with other professional staff)
  • Eligibility for academic appointment at the University of Toronto
  • Additional academic training and experience in neurology and rehabilitation and in providing medical care to CCC patients would be an asset
