Applications are invited for the position of Chair of the Department of Family & Community Medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. The successful candidate must be eligible for academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The appointment as Chair will be for a 5-year term effective October 1, 2021, renewable following a favourable review.
The successful candidate must be an experienced clinician. In addition to a record of excellence in research, teaching and quality improvement, the Chair will possess outstanding leadership, management and communication skills, enabling leadership of a geographically-dispersed Department—located at fully- and community-affiliated hospitals and in the community. They will be committed to excellence in education and have a track record of successful collaborative leadership. The Chair must also have demonstrated teaching excellence in a degree-granting program at graduate and undergraduate levels and significant experience as an effective mentor to successful trainees. The Chair will have a sophisticated understanding of forging collaborative relationships in the public and private sectors and utilizing effective strategies to build and sustain effective partnerships locally, nationally and internationally. The Chair will have a particular appreciation for a distributed medical education environment and diverse models of primary care, including those involving inter-professional teams. The Chair will bring an inclusive vision and have demonstrated experience in multi-disciplinary and multi-perspective environments. The Chair will have knowledge and an understanding of the diversity of trainees, faculty and the communities in the Greater Toronto Area, and will be deeply committed to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI)—particularly in the context of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The successful candidate must have the vision and ability to take the Department of Family & Community Medicine to an even higher level of academic achievement and recognition.
Among other responsibilities, the Chair will have oversight over the promotion and implementation of strategic priorities; recruitment, development and retention of faculty; fostering of collaborations with internal and external partners; and education and research programs in a large geographically-dispersed department.
The successful candidate must have a medical degree, College of Family Physicians of Canada certification in family medicine (or equivalent) and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The preferred hospital site for the Chair’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and be at one of the Department’s core teaching sites.
