Psychiatry Hospitalist Position

Job description:

An exciting opportunity for a Psychiatry hospitalist to provide medical care for physical health problems of admitted inpatients on a new 39 bed (with future capacity of 44 beds) acute care adult psychiatric inpatient unit 1 to 3 weekdays a week starting September 1, 2024.

There is also a possibility to work some weekends if a candidate is interested. The hospitalist would work closely with members of the psychiatry team, including psychiatrists, nursing and allied health to deliver quality medical care to an increasingly complex patient population with co-morbid medical, psychiatric and addiction conditions.

Areas of responsibility 

  • Performing admission history and physical exams for newly admitted patients (Average 2-3 new inpatients daily).
  • Managing subacute and chronic medical conditions for patients admitted to the unit (average following up to 6-10 inpatients on a day).
  • Assessment of in-patients with acute medical concerns and clinical deterioration and coordinating care with other hospital in-patient specialties/clinicians as required in a timely manner.
  • Supporting psychiatry treatment team with determining appropriate discharge plans (and completing appropriate referrals) required for a given patient’s medical conditions.
  • Communicate and work collaboratively with the psychiatry team about admitted patients medical conditions/needs through verbal communication, EMR documentation, attendance at some rounds.
  • Average time commitment each day of work is 2-2.5 hours physically on site and to be available to be reached by phone during workday from 9 AM to 5 PM. No on call requirements.

Renumeration: Fee for service with stipend.

Minimum qualifications include: 

  • Certification or eligibility to be certified with the College of Family Physicians and eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Currently credentialed or eligible for credentialing at Michael Garron Hospital.
  • Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.
