Humber River Health

Humber River Health (Humber) is Lighting New Ways in Healthcare. In 2015, the lights were turned on at our new, state-of-the-art hospital, which is now home to the newest Family Medicine Teaching Unit (FMTU).

Full of leading-edge technology and built on the principles of ‘Lean, Green and Digital’, our staff, physicians and volunteers continue to shine. Serving a catchment area of more than 850,000 people, Humber is a 1.8 million square foot, fully-digital acute care facility home to over 4,000 employees, 700 physicians and 500 volunteers. Our mission is to work together to deliver innovative, safe and compassionate healthcare in our community.  The Hospital was recognized by Forbes as one of Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity 2022.

The Hospital’s commitment to safety has been recognized by the Canadian College of Health Leaders’ with the 2021 Excellence in Patient Safety Award. We prioritize patient safety and high reliability care through the use of closed loop automation, robotics, predictive analytics and artificial intelligence. We have developed advanced patient flow and care monitoring tools supported by the Command Centre team contributing greatly to an efficient patient flow and safer care. Our Command Centre acts as a “mission control” to manage patient flow and drive the quality of care using real-time data feeds from across the Hospital resulting in improved flow, better patient safety and outcomes. The Hospital’s Research Institute has three pillars of priorities: optimizing care through technology, community connection, and primary care and population health systems.

Humber is also LEED Gold Certified and ranked #2 for energy efficiency in the Greening Health Cares’ international benchmarking of more than 280 large, urban acute care hospitals from Canada, the United States and Europe.

The Humber River Health FMTU will provide opportunities for residents to learn with academic and community-based family physicians. The FMTU is a site of the Humber River Family Health Organization. Residents will have access to interdisciplinary health professionals such as social workers, nurses, nurse practitioners, chiropodists and pharmacists to support collaborative learning and the care experience.
