Investigator Awards Program
The DFCM Investigator Awards Program provides funding to protect research time for DFCM faculty members. For each position, the DFCM will contribute up to $20,000/year to protect 40% of the faculty member’s time for research. The DFCM provides funding to protect research time for the following 5 types of DFCM faculty members:
Clinician Scientists (faculty with >50% protected research time)
Clinician Investigators (faculty with <50% protected research time)
Research Scientists (non-clinician PhD researchers with >80% protected research time)
New Investigators (faculty within 5 years of receiving their highest academic degree)
Graduate Studies (faculty enrolled in graduate research degree programs)

Waddington Awards
The DFCM Investigator Awards Program is pleased to launch new opportunities to provide funding to protect research time for community-site DFCM faculty members (see definition below for eligibility). These new awards are made possible by generous donation from the Waddington Family Fund. For each position, the DFCM will contribute $20,000 per year to protect 40% of the faculty member’s time for research.
The following new award positions are currently available:
- Waddington Early-Career Researcher Awards (up to 3 positions available):
The goal of this award is to assist faculty to develop their own research capacity and independent research programs (e.g., obtain peer-reviewed funding and publish as first author in peer-reviewed journals).
For each position, DFCM will contribute $20,000 annually for up to 5 years (subject to annual review) to protect 40% of the faculty member’s time for research. To be eligible, each position must also receive enhanced matched funding from their site Chief/Department Head or an external source (e.g., peer-reviewed or non-peer-reviewed salary award from an agency, operating grants that allow salary support) or a combination of funding sources. Funding by commercial for-profit agencies (e.g., pharmaceutical, technology) are ineligible. - Waddington Fellowships (up to 2 positions available):
The purpose of these fellowship awards is to provide protected time for DFCM faculty at community-based sites with demonstrated strong interest in and commitment to research, with the goals to develop their core research skills and capacity through engagement in mentored research activities, and, ultimately, to develop their own research capacity and future independent research programs.
For each position, DFCM will contribute $20,000 annually for up to 2 years to protect 40% of the faculty member’s time for research. To be eligible, each position must also receive enhanced matched funding from their site Chief/Department Head or an external source (as above).
Criteria
For these awards, community-based sites are defined as follows:
- Associate TAHSN affiliates (see this link; e.g., Humber River Health, Michael Garron Hospital, North York General Hospital, Scarborough Health Network, Trillium Health Partners), or
- Community hospital TAHSN affiliates (e.g., Georgian Bay General Hospital, Lakeridge Health, Oak Valley Health, Southlake Regional Health Centre, Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care), or
- Sites outside the TAHSN network (e.g., Barrie, Orillia), or
- Community-based physicians who do not practice in one of our core DFCM sites
Note: Faculty who already hold a Clinician Investigator, Clinician Scientist, or Early-Career Researcher award are ineligible.
For those applying for a Waddington Early-Career Researcher Award:
- All applicants must have a primary academic appointment in the DFCM and be an active faculty member in an affiliated community-based site, as defined above, as of the start date. DFCM Division members are welcome.
- If an independent research program is already established (e.g., securing competitive research funding as principal investigator, first authorship of peer-reviewed publications, supervision and mentorship of graduate students/medical students/research staff in the context of the faculty member’s own research program), it is expected that the faculty member would be no more than 5 years into their independent research program.
- Applicants should demonstrate interest in becoming future Clinician Investigators (less than 50% time protected) or Clinician Scientists (50% or more time protected).
- Applicants should be able to provide evidence of research productivity, appropriate for stage of career and community-based context, in terms of peer reviewed grants (as PI, Co-PI, or Co-Investigator), peer-reviewed publications (as first author or co-author) and other relevant measures of productivity.
- A graduate degree (including a degree in progress) is an asset but not required.

- Applicants should demonstrate strong interest in advancing their research skills and becoming future New Investigators.
- A formal supervisor who is a senior DFCM-affiliated researcher with whom an applicant will engage with during their fellowship must be identified. Applicants must also propose a research project that is approved by the formal DFCM supervisor. (DFCM will help to match each applicant with a senior DFCM-affiliated researcher if requested.)
