Application deadline: Cass Family Grants

Through the generous support of the Cass Family, and in honour of R. Jeffrey Cass, the Cass Family Grants for Catalyzing Access and Change will be awarded annually to researchers working on pilot projects related to improving accessibility to, or experience with, the healthcare system. Circumstances may include, but are not limited to:

  • Mental health issues
  • Complexity of illnesses, medication and/or treatments
  • Interplay of physical illness and mental health issues
  • Language, social, cultural or other impediments or barriers that affect access

This year the fund will provide grants in the amount of $5,000 each. Grants are open to all faculty members in the Departments of Family and Community Medicine, Psychiatry, and the Rehabilitation Sciences (Departments of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Physical Therapy).

Applications will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary University of Toronto review committee.
The applications are due by Tuesday, May 19th, 2026 @5:00pm

Evaluation Criteria:

Projects can be research, education or knowledge-translation based. Projects must include the following:

  • Focus on vulnerable people or populations
  • Innovation, with respect to improving access to, or interaction with, the healthcare system
  • Collaboration – preference will be given to applications that represent at least two partner departments and are inter-professional in nature
  • Focus on quality improvement
  • Preference will be given to applications with matching funds (in-kind contributions do not meet this criterion)
