BRCA: 30 Years, Discovery to Impact

This event is hosted by the Peter Gilgan Centre for Women’s Cancers at Women’s College Hospital with support from AstraZeneca and Merck. The closing receptions are hosted by Women's College Hospital Foundation.  

Join us on November 4-5, 2024 as it marks 30 years since the discovery of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. To celebrate Women’s College Hospital (WCH) is hosting BRCA: 30 Years, Discovery to Impact, a two-day hybrid event highlighting research and Innovation related to the discovery, including the work of Dr. Steven Narod who was part of the team that made this important medical breakthrough.  

At this event, we will highlight findings from 30 years of research and innovation including:

  • establishing the effectiveness of cancer risk reduction surgeries
  • treatment of BRCA-associated breast cancer
  • contributions to national and international guidelines that inform care across the globe
  • a keynote address from Dr. Steven Narod, Senior Scientist at Women’s College Hospital Research and Innovation Institute with a focus on how he and the Hereditary Cancer Research Unit at Women's College Hospital have continued to make significant impacts on the management of individuals at high-risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer

The events will be hosted with in-person and online options via Zoom:

    • Physicians and other healthcare providers, genetic counsellors, researchers and other professionals or trainees working in the prevention, detection and treatment of of BRCA-associated cancers.
  • Doors Open: 8:30 a.m. 
  • Program Begins: 9:00 a.m.
  • Closing Reception: 3:45 p.m.

Day 2: November 5, 2024

  • For Patients & The Public 
    • Individuals or families who carry a BRCA mutation or may be affected by a genetic mutation associated with an increased risk of breast or ovarian cancer.
  • Doors Open: 9:30 a.m. 
  • Program Begins: 10:00 a.m.
  • Closing Reception: 3:00 p.m.
