Program + Site Highlights

  • Inaugural year July 2023
  • The FMTU clinic is a purpose-built space– ensuring that clinical flow is optimized, and at the same time focusing on providing the highest patient care and learning experience.
  • The FMTU is a key in-house residency program based in the hospital allowing for 1:1 ratio with preceptors and flexibility in terms of scheduling off-service rotations.
  • The FMTU serves a large, diverse and equity-deserving community that has a greater proportion of individuals who are 80+ years of age and live alone, one of the highest percentage of racialized populations including many newcomers to Canada, as well as the highest percentage of unemployed individuals.
  • There are high volumes in ED and Obstetrics within the Hospital providing great exposure and diversity in cases.
  • Residents will manage their own family medicine patients through the horizontal program, which enables continuity of care throughout residency.
  • There is a unique offering of a rotation in social accountability where residents will have the opportunity to learn and care for equity-deserving patient populations within the community in partnership with other healthcare organizations.
  • The innovative, state of the art Command Centre will support access to real-time data for quality improvement and for use in research projects.
  • New amenities available to support residents, including designated FMTU resident lounge.
  • Academic half-day seminars every Wednesday morning
  • Residents will be supported by a team of interdisciplinary health professional including social workers, nurses, nurse practitioners, chiropodists and pharmacists – a collaboration experience as part of the learning.

Curriculum

  1. Family Medicine

The FMTU is located centrally within the Hospital. The horizontal curriculum model will enable residents to manage their own group of patients for the entire duration of their residency to provide longitudinal care and management for the course of illness while emphasizing health promotion and illness prevention. Supervisors and mentors will include faculty located in the FMTU and the community.
