Trillium Health Partners is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto and is an associate member of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network.
Trillium Health Partners received over 1.75 million patient visits in 2020, including over 208,417,000 Emergency Department visits. Trillium Health Partners is one of Canada’s largest academically-affiliated tertiary care hospitals with highly-specialized regional programs, making this a great training site for University of Toronto Family Medicine residents. We have specialty departments in all major fields of medicine including family medicine, internal medicine, complex continuing care services, cardiac surgery, surgery, obstetrics & gynecology, emergency medicine, orthopedics, diagnostic imaging, pediatrics, cardiology, Neuro/MSK, rehabilitation medicine and psychiatry. In 2019 Trillium announced the location of a new health center in partnership with Heart House Hospice that will improve access to long-term and hospice palliative care for the people in Mississauga. This development will include the first residential hospice in Mississauga.
Trillium Health Partners - Mississauga Hospital is situated in the heart of the city’s south end, just minutes from the QEW and is serviced by local public transit systems. Mississauga is the sixth largest city in Canada and is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the nation. The bustling waterfront, many parks, art and theatre at the Living Arts Centre, nightly entertainment, fine dining and shopping at Square One – one of Ontario’s largest shopping malls, makes Mississauga the perfect city for both learning and leisure.
Trillium Health Partners - Queensway Health Centre is a model ambulatory care center, which offers patients access to one of the most convenient and comprehensive range of outpatient services in the country. The Queensway Health Centre features one of the largest day surgery centers in North America (Surgicentre), a widely-recognized Cardiac Wellness & Rehabilitation Centre, the first comprehensive spine center of its kind in Canada (Kingsway Financial Spine Centre), and The Betty Wallace Women’s Health Centre, with a focus on early intervention and screening of osteoporosis and breast disease. For the convenience of staff, visitors, patients and medical residents, Trillium Health Partners offers a shuttle bus service between the Mississauga Hospital, Queensway Health Centre and Credit Valley Hospital.

Curriculum
The two-year horizontal program is built around the fundamental experience of residents providing ongoing medical care for their own patients within the Family Medicine Teaching Unit (FMTU).
- You will manage a mini practice of 125-200 patients that they will inherit from the practice of our graduating residents.
- Throughout the majority of their specialty rotations, you will see your own family medicine patients three half days per week throughout the two years (exception: during the PGY2 Teaching Practice experience, you are not required to manage your patients at the FMTU or attend the academic half-day seminars).
- You will have an opportunity to build and maintain your own family practice.
- You will develop continuing relationships with patients and their families.
- You will sustain your role as a family physician throughout your training.
While maintaining your longitudinal family medicine clinic, you will spend one or two rotations within several of the Trillium Health Partners’ specialty departments, resulting in seven to eleven specialty placements per year. Core rotations include family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, hospitalist obstetrics/women’s health, musculoskeletal, mental health, emergency medicine, surgery, geriatrics or palliative care as well as two-three elective/selective rotation. The flexibility of our second-year curriculum recognizes the need for you to identify your learning objectives and select rotations accordingly.
With seven elective/selective blocks over two years, you are provided with the opportunity to choose the rotations that will meet your learning needs. You are provided with support for completion of your academic project. PGY1 and PGY2 residents will also spend one-half day per week in academic seminars.
Trillium Health Partners - Mississauga Hospital has an expanding breadth of teaching opportunities. Our residents currently assist in teaching Foundations & Clinical Skills students as well seminars for family medicine clerks on their core rotation block. With the Mississauga Academy of Medicine, there are increased opportunities to mentor and teach undergraduate medical students.
