International Global Health Electives
Enhance your competency in the area of global health to improve health equity in resource-limited settings
Residents can apply for an elective taking place outside Canada, in a resource-limited setting or with vulnerable populations, for the purpose of enhancing competency in the area of global health.
What is global health?
While there is no single, universally endorsed definition of global health (GH), at DFCM, global health is “an organizing framework” for “study, research and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving health equity for all people worldwide.
International electives (as opposed to global health electives), that is, electives NOT primarily aimed at enhancing knowledge and skills related to health equity and the care of populations in lower resourced settings outside of Canada, are not the responsibility of the global health and social accountability program and can be arranged by residents as deemed appropriate by their site director.
Please note that the Global Health & Social Accountability program at DFCM does not arrange nor schedule global health electives. We do however when appropriate, help residents develop clear, SMART objectives for their experience.
Guiding Principles of Global Health Electives:
-
Bi-directional learning
-
Anchored in respectful relationships
-
Anchored in the needs of the community
-
Cultural safety and cultural humility
-
Capacity Building
-
Accountability
