Unity Health Toronto – St. Joseph’s Health Centre

St. Joseph’s Health Centre (SJHC) is a 376-bed community teaching hospital situated in west-end Toronto, serving a core population of over 500,000. Situated next to expansive High Park, the neighbourhoods surrounding the hospital are home to a diverse community of long established Polish, Ukrainian, and Portuguese families alongside recently arrived immigrants, refugees and young families from all over the world and many walks of life. The quiet, tree- lined residential streets surrounding the hospital and the waters of Lake Ontario, visible from the hospital windows, belie the fact that the city centre is only 20 to 25 minutes away by car or subway. An ambitious redevelopment plan is transfiguring the hospital, especially with the opening of the new Our Lady of Mercy wing which houses most of the in-patient acute care, our new Lakehouse Palliative Care and a new emergency department.

Through its affiliation with the University of Toronto, St. Joe’s is now part of the Unity Health Toronto along with St. Michael's Hospital and Providence Health Centre, and has a clearly stated vision to be ‘the best community-based teaching hospital in Canada’. This is a vision supported by the hospital’s administration, the Department of Medical Education and Scholarship and the numerous clinicians in the hospital involved in teaching on a daily basis. No department has more to gain from this vision than the Department of Family Medicine, home to the largest number of residents in the hospital.
